Note that in several cases, many of the conference champions were actually co-champions, but all won the "head-to-head" games versus the other conference co-champions and thusly were the representative for the conference in the Cotton Bowl. In 1994, Texas Tech won the co-championship because Texas A&M was on probation and ineligible for a bowl game, and Texas Tech had never been to the Cotton Bowl.
